I put my motorcycle up for sale (if you’re interested click HERE) and listed it on a number of sites to help get the word out. Those included paid ads as well as enthusiast sites.
Within 24 hours, I got a response. Beauty, I thought, and what’s better he didn’t haggle. He offered to pay me the advertised cost. Too good to be true? Yep.
Here’s the scam: he could only pay me by PayPal. Supposedly he’s an oceanographer at sea at the moment, with no access to his bank account but did have access to his PayPal account, which was linked to his bank account. He could transfer money into my PayPal account and then organize an ‘agent’ to collect the bike when the money had hit.
Sounds foolproof, right? The money goes in, he sends his guy around, collects the bike and we’re all happy.
As a former journalist (ex-crime rounds), all of this sounded fishy in the extreme. His story sounded lame (‘if he can access PayPal over the Internet, why not his bank account?’; ‘what’s with the flimsy oceanographer at sea line?’, etc.) and I did some homework as to how PayPal works and doesn’t work.
Essentially the scam works because PayPal allows buyers to dispute a transaction and if done with a credit card, the issuer can ask for a ‘chargeback’ if the buyer disputes the sale. This means that after the money has gone in, even if you have transferred it to your account, the buyer’s issuing bank can order a ‘chargeback’ on the money you were paid, which means you have to pay it back one way or another. Meanwhile, your goods have been delivered or picked up and you have no way of recovering them because the phony buyer has disappeared.
This asymmetry in the buyer/seller dynamic means the seller can be caught short — big time.
I emailed my erstwhile oceanographer with a hanking to buy a motorbike for his favourite cousin in Perth saying I would only take cash (on pick-up was was fine), a cashier’s cheque (with goods to be picked up AFTER the cheque cleared) or a direct deposit (bank-to-bank, with 24-48 hour pick-up after the transaction cleared). I never heard back from him, which was not much of a surprise.
Also, one more word of caution: it’s not just PayPal, it’s also Western Union that you can have problems with, so beware folks, there’s some serious shonks out there that are waiting to take advantage of you if you don’t have your wits about you.
Same thing happened to us this weekend. Paul Smith at Sea wanting to purchase our Audi as a surprise for his father. Even though it was a very “fishy” tail we sent a request via PayPal for the $$$….we figured no harm could be done by this. The scarey thing is that he sent 2 x reciepts from a PayPal address saying the money had been transferred. Pity he cannot add and he over paid by $500 and his grammar is so poor his little scam stuck out a mile. I have reported to the relevant bodies however no reply as yet. I wonder if they get so many scams they just ignore these guys?
Mackey’s jacket is like a 20-page cautionary tale.
Thank you all for your posts. I just got the exact same email from the infamous Martin the “oceanographer”. I posted an ad to sell office furniture. Same thing, immediate purchase, furniture for his dad, paypal etc.,no haggling or counter offer, all to good to be true. Something told me to check him out, thank you Google and all of your posts.
Thanks to all those that have posted information about this scam, very much appreciated.
Just got am email from a bloke (I’m in Australia) wanting to buy an item I had listed. Described perfectly by all the comments above, poor English, “last price”, his email came through as Chris Apergio.
Just for the sake of it I thought I might Google his name while waiting for a reply, hoping for him to confirm a price. Needless to say I am very very grateful that this blog has been kept up to date……
Thank you so much!! This is the one I got. All this was extremely helpful!

Thank Am Ok with the price $4,000.00 i will make the payment in to your paypal accountas soon as i here back from you. there is a little problem with the shipping agent, I am currently on sea and i am buying the it for my dad as i explained earlier on and i tried to book pick up with my pick up agent, but they asked me to pay first before they can make the booking, and they only accept western union money transfer for payments and they dont accept paypal or bank transfer and I tried to send the money online but i couldnt, i’m tired now, i dont know what to do.. I am on sea and there is no way i can find a western union agent to make the transfer to my pick up agent. I will like to know if, its ok for me to include my pick up agent’s fees in the payments I’m about to send to you through paypal, my pick up agent charged $600 plus insurance and all ‘o that, after i have made the payments you will help me forward the $600 to my pick up agent through western union money transfer, this I would have done myself and not bother you but, for the fact that I am
currently on sea, it will be difficult for me and i will like the whole transaction to be done as soon as possible and i can be the next owner. I only seeking your consent before going ahead with the payments. I will so much happy to hearing back from you soonest and i can go on with the payment without any delay.
Please email me as soon as posible
Thank you
Martin

WATCH OUT!
PS WHY ISNT HE SMART ENOUGH TO CHANGE HIS NAME???
HI wow…i too have had the same problem
im in australia and tried to sell a road case for my husband on ebay for $500 , it sold straight away to a guy from poland who was an oceanographer at sea…same story but different name..so i sent the email to @ebay.com">spoof@ebay.com and they confirmed it was a fake…i relisted it and didnt hear from the guy again..it didnt sell ..so i relisted it again..and bam…within 2 hours of it being listed its sold tooycole79374hyfhf from poland who just signed up to ebay that day ,asking for my email address so his agent can contact me…he has my email address via ebay..i have ignored him and relisted the item, changed my stats to sell to people in australia only and emailed ebay for refund on my fees..haahah..
the last guy from poland who was the oceanographers name was tutucole345…
Martin Wood, phony oceanographer, emailed me several times this week and last week with the same lines! After reading this article, I closed my PayPal account. I will ignore any future attempts to reach me via email. Thanks for a much-needed heads-up!!
Thanks for all the posts from everyone. I just posted something on Craigs List for the first time and received an inquiry from Martin Wood, oceanographer. Same story – he can only pay by paypal and wanted to surprise his Dad. I’m curious about the scam, though. If I get proof of sale – like a contract, signature, and photographs from the representative who picks up the items, I would think the dispute of sale would not hold up. But, with all the similar stories here, this is obviously not legitimate and not worth testing. Sadly, there really is a guy named Martin Wood who is involved in ocean rowing. This is obviously not him, but someone using his name.
Got the same message from Charles Coleman…and I sell felt flower bouquets.
hello,I really appreciate this, and I am an oceanographer and am currently at sea at the moment, i am buying the item as a gift for my wife, i want to make it a surprise for her,she won’t know anything about the item until they get delivered to her, i can only pay through PayPal as i don’t have access to my bank account online as i don’t have internet banking, but i have my bank account attached to my PayPal account and this is why i insisted on paying you through PayPal,So please kindly get back to me with your PayPal details and your best price for the item,so i can proceed with the payment and after the payment has been done, i have a pick up agent that will come around to pick the item up after i have made the payments for the item.please get back to me asap.
Thanks
Same, mr woods wanted my chesterfield set… Paypal for daddy. Full of bs. Thanks for saving my time and money
He’s still at it! I recieved the exact first email as Jonathan. I agreed to Paypal then he sent me the below message.

Thanks for the warning. I just got an email from Martin Wood, the oceanographer! He is still out at sea wanting to purchase my Olhausen pool table off Craigslist. Not only is your story spot-on, he even offered me an extra $50 to take the add off Craigslist. I am glad I Googled “Martin Wood” oceanographer. I got several matches. Thanks again for the warning. I always thought PayPal was flawless. Now I know better. Take care, Bernie
Well he’s still at sea and still at it but this time under the name Paul Smith – Oceanographer….haha yeah right hes a load of crap. Just did the paypal, agent pick up, don’t have an EBAY account speel to me trying to buy my dining room set. Thank heavens for sites like this….Thanks guys.
my fiance and i put a dog box up for sale and after a few days mr. martin wood sent us an email asking if it is still for sale. we replied yes, but i am still leary of the whole thing. he said he would send us an additional $30 for the delay and he would arrange a pick up time after we contacted him that we had cashed the money order. he also stated that he was in london on business and that his assistant would be mailing the money order and we should receive it in 3-5 business days. i am very paranoid of this. any suggestions or stories like mine????
Thank you for publishing this. I received am email this morning from Tracy Williams
email :

Googled and this confirmed to me it was a scam!
This is hilarious! I actually knew it was a scam almost from the beginning. All I was trying to sell were 2 25 cent candy manchines. Hardly worth his time! I thought it seemed fishy so I passed info emails to other family members who thought the same thing. So with my photoshop skills I found a previously used western union transfer and erased all the info that was on it and placed his info on it. I then emailed it to him (keeping the same control number) and said here is your money. I actually told him I accidently overpaid him 1k and that I wanted him to send that 1k back to me. I posted my pic on facebook and all my friends got a kick out of it. I actually am having more fun jackin him around and making him frustrated! What a pathetic scam! Scary that some people have probably fallen for it which is so sad. DON’T EVER SEND MONEY THRU WESTERN UNION ACROSS SEAS!!!! There is a reason why they always use western union and it’s because WU doesn’t care! Thanks for posting on this site.
was selling van equipment and was approached by this oceanographer….
name was bird? from poland? i gave them my paypal email so they can make the $900 payment…
if they pay me then they can have it.. simple as that…
Make sure you log into your paypal in a seperate browser and don’t click on a link that they post inside the body of the email. That is how you can make sure whether you got paid or not. Don’t hold your breath……I am sure your situation isn’t any different than all of ours. Good luck!
Hi I am experiencing a similar furniture transaction for a sofa I sold on E-bay in Australia to Jenifer Bird of Poland who could be the same person as Martin Wood. They are trying to get me to remit by Western Union A$1800 to their agent in London U.K. named as George Yannas, Primrose Gdns, NW3 4TJ before releasing the purchase money to me. I have refused to do the transaction and insisting that it is cash on collection. They have been using fake PayPal Receipts, fake E-bay notices etc. – they are good so beware of Jenifer Bird
Hi everybody! The guy names Zac Thomas is a scamer!! be aware… he is out there to get your money!!
I am so happy to be able to trust my gut feeling.. because I also had that scumbag crim names ‘Zac Thomas’ petroleum engineer working on a off shore rig in Australia approaching me via email to buy my car, (I am from Auckland, New Zealand.. and he could be in Australia??). His emails did sound to good to be true.. so I only can say.. do not use paypal… only cash… and do not give any of your details out. Read the emails he wrote to me… this is just bad stuff.
This is what he emailed:
Thanks for the quick reply and will like to purchase your camper van. Can I pay you $16,500AUD for it?
I will be paying you with my PayPal because it’s attached to my bank account,If my offer is accepted send me your email with PayPal,(Paypal ID) so i can pay in right away.
I am a petroleum engineer on a rig offshore and do not have much time on me.
Make sure you get back to me so that i can arrange for pick up as i will like the item to be picked,so no shipping included.
I await your reply!
His second email:
I will try my best to answer all your question.
-Yes, i can pay in AU $
-You will register with paypal and link your bank account(details) with paypal then i will need your email associate with paypal in order to send the payment.PayPal will credit the money into your account after the payment has been sent from my ends and the money will autmatically go to your bank account afterward.
-I will like the camper to be picked up after the payment has been sent to your paypal account. Immediately the payment has been received into your paypal account, anytime you complete your paypal registration is OK by me.
This is what you need to know about paypal!!! Very tricky!!
You need every tiny bit of paypal to understand what you are against.. I just don’t use it at all!!
This asymmetry in the buyer/seller dynamic means the seller can be caught short — big time.
All the best Eva
Thanks for this, I gave this guy my email to set up payment but then he wanted me to Western Union his shipper with money he sent me too. I am glad I am a paranoid guy who googles everything. Thanks for the posting, you just saved me a huge hassle. My family is trying to sell my grandparents furniture as they have moved to a home and need to pay for that facility. Phew, could have been a major setback!!
Chris
Just got a Martin Wood the oceanographer response to a big ticket craigslist item of mine. Thanks to this forum for saving me from making a mistake. Very thankful my suspicions and googling prevented a loss.
Luckily, I did check this loser out (Martin Wood the Oceanographer) through your posts after becoming extremely suspicious. DO NOT DEAL WITH THIS JERK! He was on the path of taking me for a $3000.00 dining room suit that I am selling for $1800.00 due to changing my decor! IF you are interested, it will be back up on Craig’s list tonight. It is a beauty!!!
Same, a $17000 Harley for his son. Same name, Jordan Evans. Thanks!!
hello everybody, we have to be careful online this day, but some are not scam, i have sold my item on ebay just almost this story and after i send the agent pick up fee via western union and send the mtcn to paypal my account was credited with the total amount due..so just be careful when you are selling or doing anything online..Frank
Thanks for posting this.. I was on ebay and was trying to sell a keyboard that ive had and never used, and was just taking up space. I set the buy it now price at $300 and within one hour i had a reply from “Mary Ann” who had Bought it outright without a hassel. I wrote a email to them saying that i noticed they were located in Poland, but i was on the central coast and only offered local pickup. The person “mary Ann” replied saying ” I won your item now with buy it now option. I am an oceanographer and am currently at sea at the moment. i am buying the item as a gift for my dad, i want to make it a suprise for him, he wont know anything abt the item until the get delivered to him. i can only pay through pay pal as i dont have access to my bank account online as i dont have internet banking, but i have my bank acc attached to my paypal account and this is why i insisted on paying you through paypal. So pls kindly get back to me with your paypal details so i can procees with the payment and after the payment has been done, i have pick up agent that will come around to pick up the item after i have made the payments for item….Greetings” …. Sounded to good to be true.. Lucky i looked up this website before i sent him/her my details…thanks for your help!!
He just emailed me today, so thank you for posting this! God bles
This guy is still in business. Just got an e-mail from him offering to buy a wheelchair lift from us ($2500). Of course we are desperate to sell, but his English was so poor and the story so flaky I thought something was up. Thank you for posting this! I couldn’t figure out how anyone would scam PayPal. Now we know!!!
Thank you so much for this forum……….it is happening to me right now and I was a little suss so I decided to look into it as the story sounded a little odd to me! Yes same thing bought at high price (too good to be true) and good ole Joe Baker who’s at “sea” and an oceanographer whose buying for his “dad” and will arrange a pick-up agent. It’s the good people that do this type of forum to get those shonks – thanks!
Same story ~ same Paypal ~ Buyer Beware!
Thanks for these posts – I just got a martin wood oceanographer email and decided to google him and found this forum. Thank you all for saving me from this scam.
Thanks for posting this. He’s been emailing me for days with the same song & dance. All sounded good until he was looking for me to post the $ to Western Union for his pickup agent. Then PayPal will then deposit the money to my account once I provide wire transfer confirmation. Too good to be true! Sounded fishy & the guys cant spell !
You just save my a**. This guy stated he wanted to buy my expensive bedroom set. Bull… through paypal. A bunch of bull! Thanks guys
THANK YOU for posting this. We were ready to sell him a $4,000 rug for his dad! Same story, same details…you saved us!!!
Wow thanks for this post,
I just got an email from him to buy my car through paypal! I thought it did sound fishy or something to do with money laundering.
Well then, i’ll be saving myself the trouble!
Thanks once again!
Thank God I decided to Google “Martin Wood Oceanographer” before selling my expensive massage chair to him! (of course it was for his Dad.)
I thought PayPal was as goog as cash—thanks for posting this!
Thanks SO MUCH for this warning. I also just had Martin Wood give the same exact story. Hmm…
same thing … and thank goodness I googled this person – Jordan Evans .. and this site came up. Evans says he’s an offshore petroleum engineer wanting to purchase car, sight unseen, for son. Same story, can’t access banking but can send $$ via paypal.
I just had martin wood the oceanographer try to buy with paypal from me. Thanks for posting this.
happened to me too
car for his dad
